Improvement to automatic formatting

Here's a small but quirk in Excel. If you are in an empty, unformatted cell,
and you set it equal to one date minus another date, the cell should not
automatically be reformatted as a date -- it is obviously a number.

For example, suppose you have

A1 1Jan95
A2 5Jan95

(where A1 and A2 are numbers formatted as dates) and then you add

A3 =A1-A2

A3 should be formatted as a number, not a date.
