In MSO 2003 I am not able to insert from a file. Program locks up

In Word, PowerPoint and Digital Image software when I try to insert Picture
from File a vertical line appears and the program locks up. Ctl Alt Delete
is the only exit possible. 2nd request

It worked. I can now move out of the garage back into the house. This all
started with a new hard drive, XP upgrade and new 2003 Office install.
