Word program locks up when formatting picture

In Word 2007, I open a text box and insert a picture (photo, not clip art)
and when I attempt any type of formatting (I'm referring to the FORMAT tab
and the ribbon of options) the Word program locks up and can only be
restarted w/control+alt+delete. It doesn't matter which option I choose
(shadow, border, shape, rotate, etc.) I've been using this software since
May 2008 and this problem only started about two months ago. No other
problems with any of the office suite, so far.

Is there some reason you're putting the picture in a text box instead of
just formatting the picture itself?

I find it easier to place the picture exactly where I want it when it's
inside a text box. When the picture is not in the text box, I don't have any
problems formatting it; but then I can't place it exactly where I want it. I
have been using text boxes and pictures this way for over a year (and it
worked fine) but recently the program started locking up.

Since the layout options are exactly the same for pictures and text boxes,
I'm curious as to why this would happen.
