The deleted items box has 146 items in it. When I try to empty the folder,
I'm getting a message saying an error has occurred.

Dear Milly,

thanks for your help. It's Outlook 2002. The exact text is

The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook.

Presumalby restarting means shutting the prog down and opening it up again.
Or is it reinstalling it - in which case do I lose data...?

I fixed this for me.
1. In Outlook, I went to "Tools, Options, Data Files".
2. I double clicked on each of the 4 (in my case) files shown, getting a
"Personal Folders" display. For each folder, I clicked on "Compact Now".
3. I copied the name of the default folder
(C:\Users\<name>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst)
4. Having closed Outlook, in the Start Menu 'search' area , I entered
SCANPST and hit "Enter".
5. In response to 'Enter the name of the file you want to scan, I entered
the copied file name and path, then clicked 'Start'. After awhile, the
scanpst program returned that errors were found. I said to "Repair" them.
(You can change the name of the backup file if necessary.)
6. I went back to Outlook and set the exiting feature under 'Tools,
Options, General' to Empty the Deleted Items folder upon exiting.
7. I quit Outlook. After asking if it was okay, it deleted all the items
in the Deleted Items folder.
8. I reset the exiting feature under 'Tools, Options, General'.

What version of Outlook do you use? It sounds like you have an ANSI PST
with a 2GB size limit. It this is the case and you use Outlook 2003 or
2007, you'd likely benefit from changing to a Unicode PST.

Cancel that last. I found the answer in Outlook Help. To wit:

Beginning with Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, a new Personal Folders file
(.pst) format was introduced that supports multilingual Unicode data and
offers greater storage capacity for items and folders. You can determine
whether your .pst files are in the new format or an earlier format.

1. On the File menu, click Data File Management.
2. On the Data Files tab, click the Personal Folders file (.pst) data file
that you want to check, and then click Settings.
3. View the Format field to see whether it contains the text Personal
Folders File or Personal Folders File (97-2002).

I have the Unicode .pst.

Perhaps I misinterpreted your original message. After reading it again, it
looks to me now that you're providing a solution to a problem and not
stating a problem. Since you posted your message as a new post and not a
rpely to an existing thread and you didn't quote anything in the thread you
only thought you were following so there was no prior context, I thought you
were saying that in spite of what you had done, you were having problems
deleting items in Outlook. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
