in PowerPoint, I cannot switch to SLIDE SHOW

This must be pretty basic, but with my PP slides up and I click on Slide Show
the screen does not transition to the full Slide Show screen I'm used to. Any
suggestions???

What happen when you switch to slideshow mode then?
Try this and see if it works:
Click on slide show > Set up show.
Under show type, check if Presented by a speaker(full screen) has been
checked. If not, put a checkmark on it and click OK.

Check the display properties (in Windows), whether display is set to two
monitors without having a second screen attached.
