$ in toolbar not working

In an excel worksheet, the $ in the toolbar does not
work. We can format the cell but can't use this
shortcut. Any ideas?

Yes that is the message. Will this be a one-time-only
thing I have to do? It's for our CEO so I have to be
thorough....

Those styles are kept with each workbook. If you have multiple workbooks with
the problem, you'll have to fix each. (If you used one as the basis for the
others, it could have propagated quickly.)

You could train them or tell them to send you the workbooks and you'll fix
them. It could be a way to become indispensable <vbg>.

Is this because the original workbook was created in
Windows 2000?

No. I think that's just a coincidence.

How was this workbook created? Did you start with an existing workbook? If
yes, you may want to go back to that file and fix it for future use.

If it was File|New, you may want to see if the author has a book.xlt (in their
XLStart folder). Maybe that template workbook is missing the Currency style.

(It doesn't sound like it came from this pc, though. If you fixed it by
starting a new workbook, then that book.xlt (if it exists) has that style.)
