In unlocking a document

In unlocking a document it refers to a field? What is a field? Where do I
find the field so I can click on it?

"It refers to a field?" What is it? Can you give the exact message?

A field is a dynamic placeholder in a Word document. It shows information
that can automatically change when something else changes. For instance, you
can type in the date, or you can insert a DATE field. The typed date will
always remain what you typed, the DATE field will show the current date when
you open the document two weeks later. (Seldom what you want.)

In a document that needs to be unlocked, often fields are FormFields. Those
are places that the user can type in when the rest of the document is
protected. Such forms are called "online forms" by Word.

All this is great Charles and much appreciated but I still am in a state of
confusion. I went to my word 2003 and opened a new document and cannot type
anytihing. it keeps saying "This modification is not allowed because the
document is locked'.
So I went to help under lock or unlock a field and it says "To unlock a
field so that field results can be updated, click the field, and then press
CTRL+SHIFT+F11.
I don't know where to click on the field because I don't know where in the
he-- the field is???? help and thanks

The document is locked because (a) it's protected, (b) it's read-only, or
(c) you haven't activated Word or it's a trial version that has expired. The
fact that a Help topic on locking or unlocking a field is the only thing
that comes up when you search for information about a "locked document" does
not mean that the article is related.
