In Word, icon randomly appears

When typing along in Word 2007, an icon will pop up that has a circle in the
middle and arrows pointing up and down around the circle. When that happens
it will skip way down on or up on my paper.
Happens a lot when typing multiple-page papers.

That happens when you click (press down hard) on the mouse wheel. The page will
then scroll up or down as you move the mouse up or down, getting faster as the
mouse is moved farther.

Click the mouse wheel again to turn it off.

I don't see any way, at least in the Intellimouse driver's dialogs, to disable
it.

It is part of the Intellimouse utility (and some other mouse drivers too)
that toggles on Scroll mode. Move the cursor up or down from the 'icon'
causes the document to scroll up or down: the further you move it away from
the icon, the faster the scrolling.

If you have a mouse the scrolls sideways, it will cause the sideways
scrolling too.

This works in other applications and not just Word and has been around for
some years.

It has also been a separate function in Word since at least Word 95 - though
it was not toggled by a double mouse-click.

Oops! The last bit should not say 'double-click': it should say Wheel Click.

Thanks Terry and Jay for responses. This has to be it. I was trying to help
my daughter-in-law....I was relatively certain she was using the touchpad on
her Dell laptop (not an actual mouse), but I'm checking with her to make
sure. What would she be "pushing" or "touching" to make this happen with a
touchpad and not a mouse??
