Inaccurate message counts when Receiving Entire Message

C

Chris Ridd

This has been bugging me for a while in v.X, and as it still happens in 2004
I thought I'd ask what's going on.

If I select a bunch of messages to download, the bottom left of the status
bar accurately notes the number of selected messages. When I choose
Message>Receive Entire message though, the Progress window will often say it
is downloading fewer messages.

For example I select 10 to download, progress says it is downloading 8.
After it downloads 8, it then correctly downloads the extra 2 messages,
during which time the progress bar is on "0 remaining". At least it doesn't
report negative numbers ;-)

Where are these numbers coming from - the news server or from Entourage?

Cheers,

Chris

Everyone sees it, sometimes, and I answered this already. Please check the
server if you missed it (click More button).

OK, I never saw your reply. I still don't, after clicking More, and I can't
see in using Google either.

This (Microsoft News) server is faulty. It shows false unreads. Apparently
it's sort of an estimate. It's worse for some newsgroups than others. When
there are no unreads showing in your message list, press cmd-opt-T to mark
all as unread. I have to do this several times everyday. It works fine on
two other news servers I'm subscribed to.

I've abandoned msnews, as the group does seem to get propagated out to my
preferred server. I still can't see your earlier response, but maybe it'll
turn up eventually.

That's foolish. Your own and others' posts to msnews. appear within about 1
minute, whereas it can take hours to be received from and then again to
propagate to other news servers.

As I said...

I know how usenet works, thank you.

The server I'm using is faster for me to access than Microsoft's, which is
why I prefer it.

That's good, sure. Does that server get MS newsgroup updates more quickly
than most others too?
