Include Page

If I use an Include Page to build the Navigation for subwebs and later need
to make changes to the Navigation will I have the option of doing it either
individually or globally by replacing the Include? Or with a Search and
Replace?

If those methods won't work would a DWT?

Thanks.

M

MD WebsUnlimited.com

Those method are an excellent choices to maintain the navigation system.

Thomas A. Rowe

If you use the Include, you would just update the Include within the subweb,
no need to use Search and Replace.

Includes only work within the specific subweb, they are used in.

You can also used the Include within the DWT for handling the navigation.

Thank you but will I have the option of doing it either
individually/globally by replacing the Include?

If by individually you mean single navigation commands, then yes. If you
mean on a given page, then no. If you change an include page it affects all
pages that have a reference to the include page.

Thanks Thomas, that's what I was looking for. I guess the Include and/or the
DWT will only work in individual subwebs then. Is that right?

T

Thomas A. Rowe

Correct as subwebs as completely independent of the root web, so the root
web and subweb can have different content and/or navigation, etc.

But A DWT can be applied to a web or multiple webs (it does not have to be a part of the current web or subweb)

True, but not if you want to also include a Include for navigation.

Well that could change my thinking. It's the "either/or" ability that I'm
looking for. Let's forget the Include Page for a minute.

If I use a DWT to build the Navigation for subwebs and later
need to make changes to the Navigation will I have the option of doing it
either individually or globally by replacing the DWT?

For example, if I have five subwebs built with the same DWT and want to
change three of them to a new structure could I design one new DWT and paste
it over the the old DWT in the subwebs I want to change?

The DWT doesn't control the structure of your web, just the look of the web,
so yes you could update the DWT and then apply/update it to the specific
subweb.

Otherwise, if you use the same DWT and make changes to the navigation, then
all webs using that DWT would be changed.

The best approach IMO is to design a single DWT for the look, then use the
FP Include Page component to handle the navigation within that subweb. This
way you have a single DWT, and 5 Navigation includes, 1 for each subweb. You
would name each include the same, but place each in it's specific subweb.

In my experiences unless you are working with a SharePoint server DWT's will
not update each page when changes are made even though the dialogue box that
comes up says it does. You need to open up each page that has the DWT
attached to it and then reattach the DWT again with the new changes. That
defeats the purpose for me. Thus whether you like it or not you still need
to incorporate includes into the DWT.

My suggestion would be to create your DWT and use includes for all of your
site design areas like an include for the banner area, an include for the
left side, an include for the footer and if you have a right border area an
include for that. Put a copy of the DWT, include pages and all files
associated with them into each site keeping the same file and folder
structure. Now what happens is if you want to add a link to only 3 of say 5
sites you edit the navigation include and then just replace the current one
with the edited one in the 3 sites you want the link added to. On the other
hand if you want to change the site banner on all sites you would just
replace the banner include in all sites. By doing it this way all pages
will update immediately. It's not as much work as it seems when you
consider the alternative. The reason you need to do it this way is because
of what Thomas was saying above you can't use includes from one site to the
next.

Bill,

The DWT will automatically update all pages if working with a Disk-based web
locally or a SharePoint Server, as it is not supported under the
FP2000/FP2002 extension.
