incompatibility with Frontpage 2000?

Bob Hatcher

I receive periodic Word 2002 documents from our office for me to put online
as updates. When I was using Word 2000 it translated over pretty well to
Frontpage 2000. Nothing I couldn't handle. Now I have Word 2002 and even
attempting to save to the 2000 level I run into margin issues where the
whole document slips to the right. Do I need to go to Frontpage 2002?

I wouldn't guarantee that upgrading to FP2002 will solve
your problem. Word just does some ugly stuff trying to
make the Web version of a document look the same as the
original in print.

If you're going to upgrade, though, upgrade to FP2003. It
has a feature that removes most of the extraneous HTML
that FrontPage adds to Word documents saved as Web pages.
This may not solve your margin problem, but it'll
probably make it easier to correct.

This question comes up often, and I am curious about it. For the last five
years, I have been dragging Word documents onto pages in FP, and it all
seems to work out okay. All my formatting stays intact, and none of my
viewers ever complain about anything. I am not a whiz at HTML, but I have a
basic knowledge, and I do not find extra tags (maybe someone else would, but
there would not be a lot), and when I use a validator like CSE, it does not
find any errors except for an occasional nesting error, and this is on pages
where I have done a lot of moving things around. I don't do any html
formatting in Word, but I format font faces, and they come out okay. Tables
and lists also stay intact.

I also understand the Program at http://cita.rehab.uiuc.edu/software/office/download.html does a fairly decent job of cleaning up MS
O (Word) html files - read the system requirements

Looks interesting, but I would not have any reason to work with html in
Word. I use Word for what Word is good for and FP for what FP is good for. I
work with a lot of stuff that people send in, and most of it needs a fair
amount of editing. Word is the best for that.

Once I have all the grammar and spelling fixed and all the italics in the
right places, I drag the file onto a page in FP. If there are photos, I add
them in FP, not in Word. I don't do any layout in Word. That's where you get
into problems. Where to put the photos, where to put the tables, what kind
of borders-- I do all that in FP. Used in this way, Word and FP make a great
team.
