Incompatibility with Gmail and Outlook in sending outgoing mail?

I went to the Gmail group forum because all day long I get error messages
that my outgoing mail cannnot be send for a # of reasons: "does not support
SSL, incompatible SMTP, can't connect to server" etc. There were tons of
people in the group who had the same problem with outlook. Is there a bug
that needs to be worked out between these two programs? Any updates/patches
for this on the horizon? PS: IT works at times but much of the time it is a
problem. I have everything set up according to the Gmail website and I've
tried everything suggested in the GMAIL group forum.

Gmail seems to have no major problems with other email clients. I have
been having a problem with Outlook 2002 and Gmail for 3 days. I had
changed nothing. I have read that the solution found is to use Windows
security manager to permanently hold open a certain port. I cannot
find Windows security manager in my version of Windows.
