Incorrect Chapter # in page #

We are converting several file cabinets worth of large technical document
from paper form to Word (thank goodness for OCR software) so that we can
maintain them with Word instead of scissors, typewriter, and tape.

We are using Word 2003 on Windows XP Professional.

I don’t know why the following format was selected, but this is the format
we are stuck with:

1.0 Introduction
2.0 Reference
3.0 Requirements
3.1 more requirements
10. Appendix I
20. Appendix II

Page number for Sections 1 - 3 is just a plain old page number
Page number for Appendices is 10-1, 20-1, etc. The prefixes for the page
numbers must show up in the TOC.

I set up the Heading styles (1-7) so they number just fine in the main
document, and when we get to the appendices, I insert a “next page†section
break between the main document and Apdx I, and manually change the “Heading
1†numbering to 10, 20, etc, and it numbers just fine in the document. In
the Appendices I set the “Include chapter number†to trigger off of “Heading
1â€.

Instead of 10-1, I see 4-1. Instead of 20-1, I also see 4-1.

I’ve read thru some of the MVP notes on numbering, but still have no clue
what’s wrong or how to fix it.
