Incorrect display of long file names

When I save a Word doc with a long file name, it used to show spaces as
spaces. Now, quite suddenly, it has started displaying %20 or &20 in place
of all spaces in the file name when I look in a directory. Doesn't seem to
make any difference whether I am using Explorer or Word to search the
directories. Is this a fault or an option I can reset?

Hi Roy,

It's an intentional behavior when you don't fully qualify the location along with the name. This is to work better on web servers
and file servers when Word can't tell which one you're targeting.

If you type, for example,

C:your long filename.doc

as your file name you will get the %20 (Space character).
If you type C:\your long filename.doc

the spaces in the name should stay as spaces.

Thank you Bob. I searched everything I could think of, and your answer is
the solution. Why on earth isn't this spelled out in MS Knowledge Base or
some other area? At any rate, thanks a million.
