increase folder tiltle length

OK but what about the same question aplied to files icons if that is the
right term. Recognising that the question I asked is a function of the
operating system, not an Office application does anyone have an idea how I
can find an answer?

Bob I is absoultly right only the programmers that wrote windows can change
that. It's set at 256 charaters why would you need more than that?

I probably did not explain myself very well. I have no problem with the 256
characters but I would like to see more of them displayed. I think that
about 16 characters are shown on what is visable. I am working on something
that I have split into four folders but I have trouble naming them in a way
that I do not finish up having to open two or three of them before I get to
the one that I want.

Bob I

View the Containing folder in Detail view and set the amount viewable at
your discretion.

Many thanks, I'm getting there. I think. It works when I make changes in,
"My Documents" but there seems no way to make it work on "My Desktop". I
tried moving the folder to, "My Documents" making the change and then moving
it back to, "My Desktop" where it promptly went back to the 16 characters
mode. Perhaps I’m expecting to much. Its not that important but not being
able to make it change annoys me.

I believe that the computer should work the way that I want to work and give
me what I want and not that I should be restricted to work the way the system
is constructed. I work the way that I do because I find it more convenient,
its as simple as that. After all, when I am working with sheets of paper I
don’t file them away after each time that I look at them so why should I have
to do that electronically. Surely that’s why a computer desktop is called
just that? I have to believe that there is a way to get what I want.

Bob I

There is a concept called "Design Considerations. The "desktop" is a
special folder, and is intended for the placement of shortcuts to
frequently used programs or folders NOT the folders themselves, My
Documents was provided for that purpose. IF you corrupt the Desktop
folder your file folders will be hosed. Your choice. The visible "title"
for a Desktop ICON is constrained by the free space around that icon.
Place the Icon in a location with free space below it, and you will see
more of the title.

Brian is right the desktop was not designed for that kind of activity...you
can go in and change the configuration if you're an expert programmer. Ms
Windows is very specific and very proproitary so even getting into their
programing takes a master hacker. Which I am not. And even if you can hack
in and change the program you are taking a risk of corrupting your entire
computer. My documents was made for this use and I agree with Brian. Or you
could try Mac. But they are more propritary than Windows. They designed it
this way on purpose and you trying to change it could lose every document and
every program and even corrupt windows itself.
Don't do it or you will be spending days fixing and reinstalling everything
and lose all you're current documents in the first place. DOS is the one
that controls it running in the background. DOS was only meant to show a
certian amount of characters and the desktop is looking to DOS for it's
commands on this subject.
I STRONGLY recommend you use My Documents and be happy that it exists
because in the days of 3.1 and DOS it didn't and life was a lot harder then.

Mmm? Deborah, who are you agreeing with?

I was agreeing with you, Bob sorry I wrote Brian by mistake. But you were
absoulely correct and I get tired of fixing machines because people don't
listen to people like you. Sometimes it takes me hours to fix something
because "I bought the machine and it should work how I want it to work".
Fine go mess your plasma TV and leave me alone, am I right. Sorry that I
said Brian instead of Bob...a mistake on my part I ASSURE you. I was
agreeing with what YOU said. In my defense I was up all night remotely
fixing a server in Tuscon that's IE wouldn't open a link in another window.
Boy that was a bear to fix. Finally got it, I still don't know how it got to
be that way but I know the fix now. Now it would only take 20 minutes to do.
Something corrupted some dll files in the registry. Weird. Sorry again, I
didn't mean to offend you as you are the one with the brain.

Not a problem here, as I hear the same thing all the time. :) Just
didn't want your message mis-interpreted by the general reader. Have a
good one, and catch some zz's! Corrupted key on that server I'll bet.

Bob,
I have a question for you...I teach Office Administration at a school in
Amarillo and I was wondering if there was a way to make a wav file play at
scheduled times throughout the day...I want the students to get used to a
phone ringing all the time as they will have to answer multiline phones when
they get a job after graduation. I'm sure there's a way and if you don't
know I'll figure it out, but if you do it'd save me a lot of time trying
different things. Maybe thru Outlook? What do you think? I respect your
brain and opionion.

Bob I

Try Add Scheduled Tasks. You'll find it in Control Panel, and in
Programs, Accessories, Administrative Tools.

D

Deborah Jean

Dang, I should have thought of that...thanks for making me not have to think.

Okay... thank you all for participating, asking and answering questions.
This is very good information. Brian, your attitude is okay; I just hope you
can accept the answers and work with them. You can save your files in My
Documents and created shortcuts to them on your desktop, drag and drop files
and folders onto the shortcuts and probably do whatever you want to do with
shortcuts instead of actual folders and files residing on the desktop. Bob
and Deb, you comments are very helpful. I'm going to copy them to several
people in our office who need to see them... from someone other than me and
for reasons other than mine. I understand in our office that folders on the
desktop do not get backed up in the same fashion or at all, as those in My
Documents. Another reason to store them in the "planned area".
