increase space to the right of two-digit numbers in numbered list

I want to keep intact the space between the number and first letter of the
sentence numbered, or actually the period and the first letter, in
double-digit numbers (like 10 and larger) to be visually consistent with the
spacing between numbers smaller than 10 and the first letter of the sentence
numbered, and have the first letters of each sentence line up the same as
single digit numbers.

Presently, the second digit and period take up the space to the right of the
first digit completely, leaving no space between the two-digit numbers and
the first letter of the sentence.

Said another way, I'd like the two-digit numbers to begin a space to the
LEFT of the single digit ones, so the space to the right of the number could
be the same and all first letters would line up.

Is there a way to do that?

Thanks,
John
