Incremental backup of PST files

Hello there,

I have a small but quite a big problem ;-)

I would like to know if there is any way I can take a backup of PST file
incrementally.
I am using Exchange 2003 on Windows 20003 Server with Office 2003 on Windows
XP (all are patched with latest SP).

I am using CA and Vertias as my backup software. I have more than 5000 users
each of them has PST file on their PC (size from 50MB to 5GB).

Now my question is if I am taking a incremental/differential backup, and
eveytime any user add a new mail or delete a mail from its PST file, my
backup software backups the whole file. Is there anywhy I can over come this
problem.
Because if you see the number of users we have is a lot and I can not take
backup again and again of the PST file. I would run out of Tapes very soon.

Please help.

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards
Sharad

Backup applications use the file Archive setting to select a file for
backup. When a file is backuped, the Archive setting is cleared. When the
file is next change Archive is set again.

Some applications, such as Retrospect {Dantz} have the capability to backup
certain types of files such as document files {like *.pst}. In Retrospect,
the new file replaces the old file vice adding incremental backup layers to
the full backup. You may want to check your backup applications to see if
they have this capability and also the ability to exclude selected files
{such as *.pst} from the incremental backup.

You state that some *.pst files are 5 Gb. As I recall, the size limit for
*.pst is 4 Gb. You may want to check the larger *.pst files to avoid the
size limit and lockup of Outlook.
