Indentation Problem

I created a template that suits me for an outline. However, when a line
that I am writing wraps to the next line, it aligns left under the
number above, rather than being lined up under the indented line above.

Can someone tell me what settings to check to change this?

You need a hanging indent. Set this in Format | Paragraph if you are typing
the numbers by hand. If you are using auto numbering, the indent must be set
in Format | Bullets and Numbering (and be sure your outline numbering is set
up according to
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html).

Thanks. I wonder if my version is too old (97). My dialog box for her
section 2.4 is missing the "Tab space after" control in the lower left
of the box. Do you think that might be my problem?

I have a much more recent version at home. I'll try it there.

"Tab space after" sets the position of the text following the number; in
Word 97, you set "Indent at" for the hanging indent and Word automatically
sets a tab stop at that position. That is, it isn't possible to set the tab
position independently of the hanging indent. In most cases, however, this
will serve your purposes.
