Independent hosting service evaluation

Hi:

Sorry for another question.

I am evaluating a new hosting service and wondering if there are additional
"independent and creditable" sources for the performance of hosting service
providers.

I usually rely on PC Magazine, CNET, ZDNET.

Appreciate your tips.

I'd discount any suggestion in a magazine, on a web site or especially from
someone that says "this is a great host - please use my ID when you sign
up". The best way is to ask - if you can post back with what are you looking
for in terms of budget, features, support etc I'm sure a few people would be
able to give you an unbiased suggestion based on their experiences.

I can tell you right off to avoid eHostingBiz (or WebHost4Life or any of
their other aliases) like the plague. They have deleted content from my
site, the site goes down sporadically, they owe me $87 and won't pay me, and
the list goes on and on.

They used to be a great host, but they've gone downhill over the past couple
of years. I think they have become overwhelmed.

Hi:

Thanks for your kind advise, and here is my situation.

(1) The current hosting service provider is ok except the database portion
and technical support are not very satisfied, so here are my major
criterions

(2) Preferably Windows-based, because ASP.NET will be used (sooner or
later), I know Unix and Linux now support ASP in some platforms, but I guess
not for ASP.NET.
(3) E-mail: With SMTP and not just IMAP and Web-based
(4) Scripts: PHP, ASP, Perl, etc (It's a common standard)
(5) Multimedia: Common standards, at least Flash and Shockwave
(6) Database: Access, MS SQL, and have a "private" folder for MS SQL is the
best, otherwise, it takes so long to open the database if need to admin it.
(7) Technical support: In addition to commonly used email, phone and online,
Live chat 24/7 is preferably.
(8) E-commerce modules available for upgrade later, preferably with leading
solution partners

Now the cost part, without E-commerce, under $25 per month, and with
E-commerce modules, I guess $100 will be reasonable.

Again, the difficult part will be the combination of ASP.NET, live chat tech
support, E-commerce modules (upgradeable) and price.

Thanks

I haven't checked all of your requirements, but you might want to look into
discountasp.com. I just moved one of my domains to them, and I've been
extremely satisfied. They won runner-up host for ASP.NET from aspNET Pro
magazine, and that award was based on developer votes, not some arbitrary
decision by the magazine such as what you get with PC Magazine.
