index cards

Hi,
I'm trying to make flash cards as a study aide. I've set the page siz
to fit 3" x 5" index cards by clicking File>Page Setup>Paper. I set th
Paper Size to "custom" and set the width to 5" and height to 3". I'v
placed images and vocabulary words on odd-numbered pages an
definitions on even-numbered pages. I'm planning to load blank inde
cards into my printer and print "Odd Pages Only." Then, I'll re-loa
the printer with the same index cards and print "Even Pages Only" o
the reverse side of the index cards. Is this the best way to prin
double-side flash cards for a printer that prints only single-sided?

My main question though is this. I want to number my flash cards s
that 1) I can keep them in order and 2) I know that I've printed th
correct definition to the corresponding vocabulary word. I trie
inserting page numbers, but this would number the front of one flas
card "1" and the back of the same flash card "2." Is there a way t
have Word automatically number the front of the first flash card as "1
and the back of the same flash card as also "1"; then the front of th
2nd flash card as "2" and the back of the 2nd flash card as "2"? I
short, need Word to insert a page-number sequence of 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3
etc. so that the front and back of the flash card will have the sam
page number.

Thanks,
j.a.g.

Before you get too carried away with this plan (which should in theory
work), make sure that Word and your printer can actually reach some
agreement about where the card is to be printed. We have many users here
reporting problems printing custom page sizes. If your printer supports 3" x
5" cards (that is, if that size is one you can select from the list on the
Paper tab of Page Setup) you shouldn't have any trouble. If not, and if you
can't feed the card where Word expects it to be, you'll probably have to
figure out where the card content prints on a sheet of Letter-size paper and
then arrange your "cards" on a Letter-size document by adjusting the
margins.

You'll also need to experiment with the duplexing. Depending on how your
printer outputs the cards, you may need to check "Reverse print order" in
the Print Options before printing the second side. And then keep your
fingers crossed in hopes that the printer doesn't pick up two cards at once!

Now for the numbering. You'll need to check the box for "Different odd and
even" on the Layout tab of Page Setup so that you can have different headers
and footers on Odd and Even Pages. Then:

1. In the Odd Page Header/Footer, insert the following field:

{ = ({ PAGE } + 1)/2 }

2. In the Even Page Header/Footer, use this one:

{ = { PAGE }/2 }

To insert each field, press Ctrl+F9 to insert the field delimiters (the
things that look like braces but can't be entered from the keyboard). Type
the plain text between the braces. You can insert the { PAGE } field by
clicking the Insert Page Number button on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Thanks for your prompt response. I'll check to see if 3"x5" can b
selected as a preset page size. In the meantime, I'm enjoy learnin
more about Word than I've known.

I tried typing the commands into the Odd Page Header/Footer, but
think I might be missing something. After the Header/Footer window i
closed, shouldn't the field be replaced with the value: 1, 1, 2, 2, 3
3? After closing the Header/Footer window, I still see the field as
typed it: {=({Insert Page Number}+1)/2}. I know from Excel that if a
equation doesn't automatically turn into a value when Enter is presse
that there is some type of syntax error, like a missing SPACE or EQUAL
SIGN or something. Can you tell me what I did wrong? Here is exactl
what I typed:

1. Control + F9 > Equals Sign > Left Parenthesis > Control + F9 > clic
Insert Page Number > click outside the delimiters holding Insert Pag
Number > + > 1 > ) > / > 2

I also tried:

1. Control + F9 > Equals Sign > Left Parenthesis > click Insert Pag
Number > + > 1 > ) > / > 2

Am I missing something? The field isn't turning into a value when th
header/footer window is closed.

Thanks,
jag

You may just need to press Alt+F9 to toggle the field code display, but
these are possible issues:

1. You don't need to press Ctrl+F9 if you use the Insert Page Number button,
as it inserts the page number as a field. The way you did it, you'll end up
with the PAGE field embedded in another field, and the result will be no
page number at all.

2. What you're showing is: {=({Insert Page Number}+1)/2}.

What I typed was: { = ({ PAGE } + 1)/2 }

When you press Ctrl+F9, the field braces are inserted with two spaces
between them and the insertion point between the spaces, ready for you to
type. In many cases, Word is not picky about spaces, but in some cases it
is. Try it again with the spaces as I've shown and see if that works better.

It worked! After I tried a combination of both suggestions, I finall
am getting the desired sequence of page numbers. Thanks

Glad you got there in the end. Discovering the power of fields can be very
liberating.
