Index (Table of Contents) with hyperlinks

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Hello all.

I have here a Word doc that has been created with Office 2003 on a Windows machine and contains an index (table of contents) where the entries are formatted as hyperlinks, i.e. you can click the entry not just the page number to jump to the respective chapter.
When I open that document in Office for Mac 2008 and update the index the hyperlinks are gone. The TOC still is the same (TOC \o "2-3" \h \z \t "Überschrift 1;1") but the hyperlinks are gone.
In Office 2003 for Windows there's a setting for the index called "hyperlinks instead of page numbers" (hope that's the right English translation from German "Hyperlinks anstelle von Seitenzahlen") but I cannot find that setting in Office for Mac 2008.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

The Hyperlinks are not "gone" but in Mac Word the text of the TOC is not the
hyperlink in files saved in the .doc format. Click the page number.

Thanks for the heads up.
And yet another incompatibility between Windows and Mac versions of MS Office. It's pretty lame that MS is not able to provide the same functionality for both OS.
Maybe I should switch to Apple Pages... Is the .doc support better there?

I would suggest you to make this as suggestion as feature to be added in
2011 Office in product feedback. perhaps or Bob or john can provide the
link. Since it will be about a Year (guessing) before it comes out
should plenty of time to put it in.

Well, no offense, but this isn't anything that qualifies in any way as
"incompatibility". The TOC hyperlinking works just fine but is implemented
somewhat differently. It's a design decision & is only one of many
differences which may, perhaps, be labeled as 'feature parity'. Quite
frankly, IMHO it's actually preferable to be able to click into the TOC
without jumping to another part of the document. In fact, when I generate a
TOC I almost always clear the Hyperlink checkbox right off the bat. For
navigation the Navigation Pane is a far more functional resource.

Whether you choose to use a different app is certainly up to you. I don't
use Pages much, but from what I've seen TOC in .doc format files work the
same there as in Mac Word. It may be a nice program in many respects, but it
certainly isn't as supportive of .doc binary... Nor are its features & UI
remotely comparable to Word for Mac or PC.

I agree. While authoring and clicking on a TOC field creating a jump
elsewhere is such a waste of authoring time (remembering that the point
of Word is as an authoring tool).
