You don't "key" anything except the text you want to appear in the index.
You insert index entry (XE) fields on the pages where your indexed items
appear.
For example, somewhere near the heading for Clam Chowder, you press
Alt+Shift+X to bring up the index entry dialog, then you type "Soups" for
the Main entry and "Clam chowder" for the subentry. If you want the page
number bold (which is what the \b switch does), you check the appropriate
box. Then click the Mark button. You do not need to type the page number;
Word generates this automatically.
Once you get the hang of how the fields are constructed, you can create them
manually if you prefer. Press Ctrl+F9 to insert the braces, then type
XE "Soups:Clam chowder" \b
between the braces. When you have finished marking all the index entries,
put the insertion point at the end of the document and use Insert | Index
and Tables (Insert | Reference | Index and Tables in Word 2002 and above) to
insert your index, selecting the format you prefer.

You can create this index easily using XE and INDEX fields. Your XE fields
will need to be formatted as follows:
{ XE "Soups:Clam chowder" }
{ XE "Soups:Minestrone" }
{ XE "Soups:Tomato" }
{ XE "Appetizers:Mushroom dainties"}
{ XE "Appetizers

izza tart" }
Etc.
For help with indexes, see Word's Help topic "Create an index." For more
specific details, see the Help topics "Field codes: XE (index entry) field"
and "Field codes: INDEX field."

Hi Irene
I think what you're looking for is a Table of Contents,
not an Index.
The following page has basic instructions for
creating
a
Table of
Contents:
How to create a table of contents in Microsoft Word

Hope this helps.

I need help with setting up an index for my recipe book
that I am writing. I have tried different set ups but
they don't work. I want a section heading and
then
the
recipes listed in ascending order that can be
found
in
that section followed by their page numbers. I
have
10
sections in the book.
Your help would be very much appreciated.
.
I have created a table of contents at the beginning of
the book but now I want to create an index at the end of
the book. This is an example of want I want to create:
Soups(section)
Clam chowder, p.30
Minestone soup, p.35
Tomato soup, p.25
Appetizers (section)
Mushroom danties, p.50
Pizza tart, p.53
etc. listing recipes in each section(10) in ascending
order. I have tried creating a table but you can only
sort by column. I don't have a full column for each
section so that creates a problem.
Thanks for your help but I still have a problem. I keyed the following:
.
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Potato Soup p.12" }
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Mussels Soup p. 12" }
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Sauerkraut Soup p.12" }
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Kohlrabi Soup p.13" }
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Beef and Potato Soup p.13" }
{ XE "Soups[\b]: Grated Borscht p 13" }
What is wrong with this set up? What I want doesn' seem
to be happening.
