InfoPath General Questions

John T.

All,

I hope someone can point me in the correct direction.

The situation:
I work for a company that developments slot machine programs. The faster we
get something to market the faster we make money. With that in mind it is
critical to the executives to know if the game is in development, QA,
compliance, or out at a regulatory agency. We track the expected date the
product will move to the next dept. along with other data.

We currently have this critical data in various locations stored in SQL,
Access, Excel, Word, Agile (3rd party software), and people’s heads. And, in
many cases the same data is hand typed in the at least three of above
mentioned formats. Since each dept. owns there own data we have high paid
project managers conducting meetings to consolidate data to create another
Excel documents for the executives.

My idea is to use InfoPath to create a form(s) that would read data from
Agile, which has a web service. With the data from Agile the first user in
the cycle would add there data and digitally sign the form. It would then
pass from user to user to add required data. We would create an executive
“view†in InfoPath so the executives could view only that information they
need.

We are in the process of deploying the Share Portal Server. I belief
InfoPath and Share Point would be a great fit for our needs.

Any thoughts or comments?
Any reasons it will fail or not work?
Any suggestions on books that included SP1?
And, I would appreciate suggestions on Share Point books also.

Thank you,
John T.
