Insert\Autotext\New is permanently greyed out-why?

In Word 2004 Mac, there is no way to create a new autotext entry because the
"new" choice within "Insert\Autotext" is permanently greyed out.

Microsoft's knowledge base article 288431 acknowledges the problem and
suggests several fixes, none of which worked for me.

Suggestions Welcome!

A Related knowledgebase article (279235) does not apply to Word 2004 and
OSX, but relates a similar flaw in OS9, traceable to a conflicting
extension. This doesn't help except to suggest that the phenomenon might
conceivably be caused by a software conflict of some unknowable type.

I just typed some text, selected it, and then New.... was *not* grayed out,
and it appeared to let me add it as an entry.

Daiya, You are right - problem solved; you have to select some text before
Word will let you create a "new" autotext entry, (whereas in other places
one comes to expect 'new' to lead to a dialog where one would specify
something to be acted upon.) On further thought, Duh! it makes sense. Hmm,
maybe I should change my email identity to "bobNoBrains"...!

Don't beat yourself up too much: I got caught by that one the week before
last. I've only been working with Word for about 20 years... :)
