Insert checkmark symbol

I want to be able to add a checkmark in a cell by only using one keystroke.
I noticed in a downloaded template that someone set this up using the MARLETT
font. Somehow they said to type a and the checkmark will appear, which it
does. How did they do this? What if I wanted to use the checkmark using the
font WINGDINGS 2 ?Can I somehow program to use one keystroke to use this
checkmark? If so, how?

I'm using Excel. I think I figured it out. The lowercase a must be the
keystroke associated with the checkmark for the MARLETT font. So, I looked
in Control Panel under Fonts and brought up WINGDINGS 2 and saw that capital
P is the letter associated with that checkmark.
