Insert Object menu item UNAVAILABLE

The Deal: form and subform are linked. This MDB app just changed to get
data instead from linked tables (SQL Srv). You browse records now in the
main form, though, and subform controls do not render unless there is an OLE
image retrieved the Bound Obj Frame for that record. Move to the Next
Record (without an OLE image) and the subform reverts to a grey, content-free
square (no controls visible)..

At no point is the "Insert Object" menu item enabled - whether from INSERT
menu or right-clicking. It is grayed out, and you cannot add any other
photos.

I have tried RunCommand acCmdInsertObject but I either get error CANNOT GO
TO THAT RECORD or YOU MUST SELECT AN OLE FIELD first ...

Any ideas?
