insert object or image as a text character?

I would like to be able to insert or paste an object into microsoft
word as a text character. I'm writing a document with many equations
in it...about four years when I did this frequently I set up a center
tab so as I typed I could hit return at the end of my line, hit tab,
insert my equation which would now be centered on the tab, hit return
again and continue typing. I can't figure out how to do this in my
newer (2000) version of Word. I realize there are other ways of doing
this (using wrapping text), but the way I did it was a very handy way
and a very consistent way (as far as spacing). I believe I either
checked a box saying "Insert As Text" or unchecked the box saying
"Float Over Text"... Thanks in advance for help.

Sounds like you want your object "In line with text". Right-click the
object and choose Format Object from the shortcut menu, go to the
Layout tab, and under Wrapping style, choose the first option.

That said, my Word 2000 defaults to inserting objects in line with
text, and this doesn't seem to be a setting I can change (I have often
wanted to, because usually when I insert pictures, I want them to
float). So I'm not sure how you're inserting your equations.
