Insert subproject to IMS, Summary Title of subproject was included

Richard Nguyen

After I insert the project "B" file (either with link or deselect project
link prior to insertion) into master IMS, Project picked up Summary Title of
project "B" file properties and inserted into IMS as a high-level task or
summary task (i.e., Level 2).

Content of project "B" file was indented to start at Level 3 in my IMS.
When I outdent the Row 1 of project "B" and deleted the Summary Title, all
dates in that inserted file messed up (changed to different dates).

How can I turn off the setting so that Summary Title of project "B" would
not be inserted into master IMS?

Hi Richard

While inserting a file, its total image is created in the master file,
whether it is linked or read only and linked.

So, in my view in this case before inserting a file you will have to remove
the Project summary from the original file, only then it won't be reflected
in the master file.

I hope it helps.

In the subproject, Tools/Options... be certain the "Show Project Summary
Task" is deslected from the View tab. See if that helps

Hi Vanita:

I removed the Summary Title from properties and resaved the file. Somehow,
during the insertion, it picked up old Summary Title. When I reopened the
subproject file, Summary Title reappeared on properties.

I also tried removing the Summary Title, selected Save Preview Picture
button, and saved the file with new name. Same thing happened. Summary Title
reappeared again misteriously.

Hi Jim:

I tried your suggestion both ways and saved it. Same problem occurred
again. Not sure how Project remembered old Summary Title and put it back to
Properties window.

Just wondering if you can duplicate the problem with your Project and
computer.
If you cannot, please let me know your settings.

By the way, my laptop ran the Project 2003 Update yesterday. I presumed
that I had all recent patches.

Richard,
Maybe I can shed a little light that I think was missed by both Jim and
Vanita.

When subprojects are inserted into a master file, Project uses the
File/Properties Title as an insertion point summary line. Further, if I
recall correctly, (it's been a while since I really delved into this),
different versions of Project will "remember" the original DOS title of
the subproject file and that's what you will see on the insertion point
summary line for each subproject. It has nothing to do with whether you
have the Project Summary Task showing in the subproject or not.

Depending on whether you have created a dynamic master, (i.e. subproject
linked to the master, not actually a part of it), or a static master
(i.e. content of subprojects actually copied to the master and no longer
linked to the original subproject), the dates of subproject tasks either
respond to the project start date of the subproject, (dynamic master),
or to the project start date of the master (static master). I suspect
the changing dates you see for subproject tasks are changing because you
have a static master.

Hope this helps.

John:

It turned out that Project 2003 automatically put back the most recent
Summary Title back to properties when that field was blank out (intentionally
by me).

However, when I changed Summary Title to something else (instead of Blank),
Project picked up the newly created Summary Title during insertion.

To work around the problem, I named the Summary Title to match my intended
subproject task/name in my IMS. For dynamic master IMS, any change(s) that I
made to IMS would be saved in the subproject file(s), if I choose to do so.
Any change(s) that I made to subproject file(s) would automatically be
reflected in master IMS when I opened up IMS file.

I am OK with this work around. Many thanks to Vanita, Jim, and you for
prompt responses.
