Insert Symbol crashes Word Office XP

Hi, I'm using Word from Office XP Pro on and XP Home
computer. Whenever I try to insert a symbol, either by
insert -> symbol or the shortcut I have put in the
toolbar, Word crashes. It's very annoying as I can't get
to any symbols!! (except the few I have made keyboard
shortcuts to). Please help!!

Thanks in advance

This could indicate a problem with your printer driver. Try deleting and
reinstalling your printer, preferably with an updated driver.

Word's Insert Symbol command is much better in Word 2002 than it was
in the past. MUCH better.

But if you still have problems with it you could also do this...

Place a shortcut to the Character Map on your desktop (XP has an entry
for it in one of your menus, but if not you can search for the
"charmap.exe" file). Then use this to copy/paste symbols or to look up
the key combos.

Thank you to Suzanne and -xiray- for your replies.

Suzanne: I uninstalled the printer and downloaded the
latest driver and reinstalled (and rebooted) but the
problem is still the same. However - I did need that
driver upgrade so that's a good thing!!

-xiray-: I hadn't thought of using the Character Map so
thanks for that one - although a roundabout way of doing
it at least it's better than not beong able to access the
symbols at all.

What I might try when I get a chance is to reinstall
Office XP and see what happens then. If I remember
rightly I'm sure when I upgraded from Office 97 to XP I
just copied in my old normal.dot to save time (I have the
toolbars set *my way* lol). That could have caused it
maybe? I don't know but it's worth a try anyway I guess.
Thanks!!
