inserted object lost transparent background

Why does this inserted object lose its transparent background when I choose
insert>object>from file to place it in the slide. I inserted a Word 2007
table into a PP2007 slide.

What's curious is if I simply copy>paste, the transparent backgound is
retained. I am trying to understand why the difference.

Any ideas would be appreciated.
