FWIW, this feature is sometimes turned on by Word itself rather than the
user. It's unlikely in most documents on most machines, but I experienced it
years ago in a document consisting entirely of complex charts on an old,
underspecced system that just couldn't keep up with the display. It's
similar to the way Word will turn off "Check spelling as you type" if you
have "too many" spelling "errors."
