Inserted pictures turn into big red X

Hi, all!

On two different Word documents I'm having the same
problem: images that I've inserted get transformed into
just a big red X. What causes this, and how do I get my
original pictures back? Do I have to tediously reinsert
the original images? How do I keep this from happening
again?

The Red X is caused by a memory problem. I found that if
inserted pictures from their original file
(Insert/picture) rather than copy and paste this was less
likely to happen; however when it did happen I found no
other option to reinserting the picture.
