Inserting a document into a template

I have a template for my stationery. I also have a lot of templates that
are based on the stationery template. If something changes on my
stationery, I have to modify the headers on each of the other templates.
How can I use a template that calls the stationery template and then
inserts just specific text for the desired document?

For example, how can I create a template for a promissory note (File |
New | Promissory Note) that calls the promissory note template
(pnote.dot) and inserts the text into the stationery template
(stationery.dot)?

Hi Mcp6453,

If I'm following correctly:
1. select the information in the stationery template you want to have
reflected in your documents

2. Insert/Bookmark and give it a name

3. In the other templates, use Insert/File and select this template. Then
click the RANGE button in this dialog box and enter the bookmark name.
Choose "Insert with link".

Thanks, Cindy. Either I am not following your instructions carefully, or
I was not clear with my requirement. Here's another example of what I
would to do.

1) Create a template (stationery.dot) that has my name, address, and
phone number in the header of page 1.

2) Create a second template or document (does it matter which one? Call
it sampletext.doc) that contains nothing but the text, "Now is the time
for all good men to jump over the lazy dog's back."

3) When I click on File | New | Stationery, Word creates a new document
based on stationery.dot and then loads the text, "Now is the time for
all good men..." into the newly created document.

I tried following your directions by creating a new document containing
the text to be inserted, highlighted the text to be inserted, went to
Insert | Bookmark and labeled the selected text "asdf". Save the
document and closed it. Then, I created a new template with background
information, select Insert | File, selected the document just created
with the text bookmarked as "asdf", selected RANGE and entered "asdf",
and then clicked on "Insert as Link". The text was correctly inserted in
the template. I then save the template, closed it, and clicked on File |
New | Stationery. It appeared that all was working well, at that point.
However, I went back to the source document, and edited the text within
the asdf bookmark. When I did File | New | Stationery, the inserted text
had not changed. I tried deleting the bookmark, selecting the new text,
and giving it the same "asdf" name. Again, the previous text showed in
the template, not the new text.

Obviously I'm doing something stupid here, but I don't know what. The
text is being inserted into the template, which is why I guess it was
supposed to be inserted as a link. Maybe I'm saving something at the
wrong time.

The application is really pretty simple. I want to be able to create a
template with my contact information but insert text from a variety of
source documents. That way, if my phone number changes on the
stationery, I only have to change it once.

Thanks for your help!

Cindy:

What is the purpose of "Insert with link"? When the template opens (File
| New), I want to pull in a paragraph from a second document. The text
of the paragraph in the second document may change from time to time, so
the resulting content of the template needs to read the paragraph in the
second document when it is opened. I think that I can accomplish this
task with an AutoNew macro, but there could be a better way.

Thanks,
Mike
