Inserting a symbol in Word 2003

Everytime I try to insert a symbol into a document, I cannot select one. The
choices come up but I cannot select a symbol.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

What happens when you navigate to the symbol you need in the Insert
Symbol panel, and double-click it?
