Inserting a video file

A

Amy

Hello:

I'd like to insert a video file into my web page using FP. Tried but did
not work. I can convert my video to any format as long as it will play (as
we see in the YouTube web site), and with control buttons.

Could anyone show me what file format and how to insert? I did Insert -
Picture - Video but did not work. All it shows on the web is an icon.
Please see http://www.seto.cc/index2.html.

What did I do wrong?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks much,
Amy

I installed and tried to insert. But it says "You can't insert a Media
Player unless a web is open". What does this mean and how do I do it?

Thank you again.

File | Open Web (or Site if FP 2003)

You must have an actual web created and open, not just a page.

I'm still not sure how to do it. Is a web an .html file? I just want to
share some videos with my family so it's going to be very simple. An .html
page with some videos.

So could you tell me what exactly to look for when the dialog box opens up
from File | Open Web?

Thank you again.

Did you actually create a web before you started creating pages? You must
have a web, not just pages.

If you haven't created a web, check the help files for instructions.

you need to click file/ open web (or file/ open site).
don't click file/ open.
the first way will open a web for you and your video tool will work, the
second way and you'll open a page without it's containing web and your video
tool won't work.
file/ open and file/ open site are diabolically similar names with very
different results.

FWIW there's also a ridiculously simple video tool here:
http://coffeecup.com and there's always www.soapbox.msn.com which is nice
since all you want to do is share video with family and such.

Then you have not created a website - you have a collection of loose
pages and files.
Use File->Open Site and browse to the folder containing the pages, and
allow it to be converted to a web.

Nothing Happens? Did the folder open? Was there an error message? Or
are you still looking at the open web dialogue?

Always works when I open a folder as a web in FrontPage or Expression
Web.

In FrontPage 2003:

File->Open Site
Select the folder group (example: My Documents) in the Look in column
Select the folder you wish to open as a website - or double click on a
folder to open that folder for further selections.
Click the Open button
A warning appears: "FrontPage needs to add information to your folder in
order to manage your Hyperlinks and other Web site content"...

Click Yes - this converts the folder to a web and the web will open. If
you have previously ticked the "Do not ask me this again" box you will
never see the warning. If on that occasion you answered "No" you may
never be able to open a web using this method, but you will get an
server error message, and the folder will not open. If you clicked Yes
before, the folder will open as a website, without displaying a warning.

Previous versions of FrontPage - use File->Open Web. The Look in bar
may be missing on the dialogue, but the rest is the same.

In Expression Web:
As for FrontPage 2003, but there will be no warnings, and the metadata
files will not be added by default. But it will be a web that opens.
To add the meta data folders and files, use Site->Site Settings -
General Tab
Tick the box "Manage the website using hidden metadata files", click OK.
The metadata files are required in Expression Web (for your convenience)
when using FrontPage Include files, Dynamic Web Templates, for
publishing changed pages only, and for keeping track of hyperlinks when
moving pages between folders or renaming pages and files.

If you are opening a folder in the My Webs folder, this will already be
a website - but it may be a folder within a website.

When you have the web open, check the compatibility settings. You need
to set the browsers to Custom, with no mention of Netscape. This may
affect the availability of some commands/options.
In FrontPage 2003 Use Tools->Page Options - Authoring Tab
Other versions - Tools->Page Options - Compatibility Tab
Expression Web - not applicable

I must have the wrong version of FP...When I do the file->open web, I can
browse to the folders but nothing happens ..It just shows all my folders
There is no conversion option.

Then you have not created a website - you have a collection of loose
pages and files.
Use File->Open Site and browse to the folder containing the pages, and
allow it to be converted to a web.

you need to click file/ open web (or file/ open site).
don't click file/ open.
the first way will open a web for you and your video tool will work,
the
second way and you'll open a page without it's containing web and
your
video tool won't work.
file/ open and file/ open site are diabolically similar names with
very
different results.

FWIW there's also a ridiculously simple video tool here:
http://coffeecup.com and there's always www.soapbox.msn.com which is
nice
since all you want to do is share video with family and such.

It asks me if I'm sure I want to convert because: 1> Pages that include
files may not be updated when included files change. 2>Hyperlinks on link
bars may be removed. 3> Themes on pages may be lost. All my
pages include files and all my link bars obviously have hyperlinks. Is the
conversion worth it? I'm not even sure what the benefits are.

If you are getting that message, then you have a web open.
Your problem with inserting the video is probably down to compatibility
problems - see my other post which mentions this.

Ok...The folder doesn't look any different but it must be a web then...Thank
you for your infinite patience!!

If you are getting that message, then you have a web open.
Your problem with inserting the video is probably down to compatibility
problems - see my other post which mentions this.

It asks me if I'm sure I want to convert because: 1> Pages that include
files may not be updated when included files change. 2>Hyperlinks on
link
bars may be removed. 3> Themes on pages may be lost. All
my
pages include files and all my link bars obviously have hyperlinks. Is
the
conversion worth it? I'm not even sure what the benefits are.
