Inserting an object with a picture

I have a template I am developing that needs to have pictures inserted
quickly. I have inserted an object and can easily insert the picture, but
the size of the file skyrockets to multiple MBs, even if the picture is only
a few hundred KBs. How can I insert these pictures in the object box without
the size of the file increasing so much? I am using Word 2003
