Inserting Columns in Enterprise Projects

K

Karen

When I insert a predefined or custom column into my
Enterprise project, I receive this message "Edits will not
be saved. Any edits made to enterprise global template
items are only available during this session. Make edits
in the checked-out enterprise global template to make them
available to all users of this Microsoft Project Server."

When I save and reopen the project, the inserted columns
are not there. However, if I insert them again, the data
I entered in each column displays.

I have Admin rights, but management does not want us
adding columns to the Enterprise Global template.

What would be the best way to be able to insert columns on
Enterprise projects and have them retain the inserted
columns?

Thank you. Karen

It sounds like you are attempting to make edits to the Enterprise Entry
table while in the Enterprise Gantt Chart view. In order to save your
edits, I would recommend that you apply the regular Gantt Chart view with
the regular Entry table. Then you can add the columns you wish to the Entry
table by inserting them. To save these changes permanently, you will need
to copy the modified Entry table to your Global.mpt file. To do this, click
Tools - Organizer - Table, select the Entry table on the right and copy it
to the left to your Global.mpt file. This file is used as the library of
your personal Views, Tables, Filters, Groups, and the like while the
Enterprise Global is used as the enterprise (corporate) library of these
same features. When you copy your custom Entry table to the Global.mpt
file, that table will be available to you in every current and future
project. Hope this helps.

Actually, we are using the regular Gantt Chart view with
the regular Entry table because the Enterprise Gantt chart
view and the Enterprise Entry views have been
inadvertently deleted from Enterprise Global template.
1. Is there a way to restore these views without doing any
damage to the current projects on the server? (These
Enterprise views do display in our test environment.)

2. Would this be why I am getting the error message given
below whenever I insert a column in my projects? (It
doesn't happen in the test environment.)

I would appreciate your recommendations. Karen

Your problem can be fixed pretty easily. To restore the Enterprise Gantt
Chart view and the Enterprise Entry table, do the following:

1. Launch Microsoft Project and log into Project Server with administrator
permissions
2. Open the Enterprise Global
3. Click View - Table - More Tables...
4. Click the Entry table and click Copy...
5. Name the new table "Enterprise Entry"
6. Click OK and then click Close
7. Click View - More Views...
8. Click the Gantt Chart view and click Copy...
9. Name the new View "Enterprise Gantt Chart"
10. Set the Table value to "Enterprise Entry"
11. Click OK and then click Close

What you have just done is to create an enterprise View and Table by coping
a nonenterprise View and Table. Now you must delete the nonenterprise Gantt
Chart and Entry table from your Enterprise Global. The reason you need to
do this is because only strictly enterprise objects belong in the Enterprise
Global. Here's how to do it:

1. Click Tools - Organizer
2. On the right side of the dialog, select the Gantt Chart view and click
Delete
3. Delete any other nonenterprise Views that may have strayed into the
Enterprise Global, such as the Resource Sheet view if it is there
4. Click the Tables tab
5. Delete the Entry table
6. Delete any other nonenterprise Tables that may have strayed into the
Enterprise Global
7. Click the Resource option for the Tables page and make sure there are no
nonenterprise resource tables; if there are then delete them
8. Click Close

Once you have done so, save and close the Enterprise Global. Close
Microsoft Project as well. The next time you open Project and log into
Project Server you will have all the new enterprise objects in your
Enterprise Global. Hope this helps.
