inserting images in SmartArt

When I select an image to be inserted in a smartArt shape, it genererally
gets bent out of shape. I have not found a way to keep the proper aspect
ratio. Is there a way to do this?

Insert the picture into the SmartArt shape.

Right-click the shape in the smartart diagram and choose Format Shape.

Go to the Fill tab.

Click the "tile picture as texture" option.

Now you can scale the picture inside the shape. Be sure to use the same
number in the scale X and scale Y boxes so the aspect ratio remains equal.

You can use the offset and alignment to make adjustments to the postion of
the image within the shape as well.
