Inserting MPEG file into Powerpoint 2000

When I try to install a MPEG file in PPT, the application
goes into a not responding state. It seems to work for
small files?

How big is this MPEG?

Can you insert smaller MPEGs?

Do those smaller MPEGs use the same codec as the larger one?
