inserting page numbers on top outside of page

If your question is to show a page number in the header, in the right o
left margin, use the host table concept to position the page number.
For example you want the page number in the right upper corner. Creat
a one-row table with two (or more) columns. Put the Page field in th
right cell, and resize/position the table so the right cell "stick
out" in the right margin.
The table borders/shading options can be used to add some nice-lookin
typographical effects. See the sample chapter (pdf) of our eBook o
www.masteringword.eu/downloads/mw_information/?300 for an example o
this principle (although in this book the page number is placed in th
footer's right margin, not in the header's). HTH.

Thanks, Henk57.
I had not thought of doing it that way, but it makes perfect sense.
Thanks also for the headsup on the website.
Have a great day!

You can equally well just give the header paragraph a negative left/right
indent.

Thanks, Suzanne! That does seem a little more simple. Does this mean that
the automatic numbering feature would not be operative, i.e., would I have to
manually number each page?

Of course not - a {Page} field inserted in the header view will
automatically number wherever it is on the page.
Incidentally the default header style includes two tab positions, one
centred at the centre, one right aligned at the right margin. So tabbing
twice would automatically right align the number to the right margin.

Not to mention that if you set the right tab to the right of the margin, you
don't even have to give the paragraph a negative right indent (won't work on
the left, though).
