inserting picture into table cell

The cursor is in a table cell. I do Insert - Picture - from file, and click
on an image - say a *.jpg picture. The picture comes into the document as a
drawing object. However it ignores the table, spreads over several cells,
and even when it's the correct size for the cell it refuses to be moved into
the cell. What am I doing wrong?

Set the text wrapping to "In Line with Text" (or, in Word 97 and earlier,
clear the "Float over text" check box on the Position tab of Format
Picture).
