inserting pictures and file size

By insterting a few .jpgs in a Word document, I ended up with a file sized >
6 Megabytes.

Is there any way to compress this document to an easily e-mailable size?

Alternatively, can I transform the inserted images to a more manageable size
by using Word or another standard MS Windows/Office program, without having
to go out and buy Photoshop or something like that?
