Inserting Pictures Into Powerpoint

I have saved some .gif images to my hard drive and wish to insert them into a powerpoint. The first one (of 5) worked fine, but the others came up with a box that said powerpoint wanted to convert the files and then said there was an error importing the images. Its my first powerpoint with version 2003 and I've never had this problem with other versions of the program.

Any sugestions.
