Inserting shapes in or near tables

Hello, all. I hope you might be able to help me with this question... It's
bugging me.

I am creating a document in Word 2003, and in this document, there is a
table that contains various cells with text. All the cells are aligned
vertically centered.

I was trying to insert a small black circle on either side of a multi-line
text cell in order to emphasize its content, and when the shape gets near the
target cell, the text in the cell automatically aligns vertical TOP! I
thought this was a strange phenomenon, and I tried dragging it to a different
cell. Voilà! The text in the original target cell went back to vertical
center, and the text in the NEW target cell aligned vertical TOP! I sat
back, scratched my head, and thought..."huh?!"

I played with a number of different settings, things that I didn't know what
the heck they were, and nothing fixes this tendency! I've already saved a
copy of the document PRIOR to all the messing around, so I still have a copy
I can work with.

Anyone keen on why this is happening, and if there's a fix to it? I just
want the picture to gently float on top of the table (yes, I played with "In
Front of Text" as well), but the shapes, alas, keep nudging my text upward.

I've always hated how Word handled tables, but it is what it is.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
