Inserting symbols in axis titles

Can anyone tell me how to put symbols into the axis captions on Excel
charts in Mac v.X? On a PC, I can draw a text box, then pull down the
"Insert" menu and access the symbols there. This option does not seem
to be available in v.X. I need to insert various lower-case Greek
symbols into the axis captions of my charts. I've tried copying and
pasting, but it changes the symbol to a letter. Any suggestions will be
gratefully received.

XLv.X is not Unicode savvy, so you can only use standard font
characters. However, if you click on the captions to edit them, you can
change the font of individual characters, so you can use the Symbol
font's lc greek.

XL04 lets you input Unicode directly.
