Inserting tif pictures in Word XP

Very often, when my wife uses Word to make a collage of pictures she wants to
print, the .tif pictures will look fine when laying them out, but upon
opening the file later, they've all turned black. Only a very few of the
details of the picture will be visible through the black. Using the picture
tools and brightening the picture does not work.
