Insertion point = black flashing box!

In a dialogue box, like File|Open, the insertion point is showing a black
block flashing - it has nothing to do with the mouse pointer and I don't know
how it was activated (visiting trainer..??) - it is very annoying for new pc
users as it is difficult to see where the cursor actually is or whether text
is selected! How do I turn it off PLEASE?

Try Start/Control Panel/Mouse/Pointers and see if the pointer for Text
Select has been changed (or maybe the entire scheme).

Thank you for that but no it's not the cursor..... It's like a black thick
bar flashing in dialogue boxes where the cursor sits waiting for typing! Like
in File, Open...
