Install failing due to insufficient space on CD!!

A

Andy D

I am trying to install office 2003 but I am getting an error towards the end
of the install which indicates that I don't have enough space on my CD! At
this point I have no choice but to cancel the install, which is a real pain.

As an example, if I select just to install Word, the setep app will note
that I have 10Gb fee space on my hard drive (which is correct), and that I
require 160Mb for the install - which is fine. However, it will also show
that I have 0Mb free on my CD and REQUIRE 250Mb on this for the install,
leading to a deficit of 250Mb - which is just plain silly.

Any advice most appreciated

Space on the *CD*? Are you sure you've got everything pointing to your hard
drive?

Yes - Everything is pointing at the C: drive - I have basically accepted the
default instal location C:/Program Files/... As an experiment, I also tried
installing to C:/dummy/... but with no effect on this issue.

Is it a real MS disk or a backup copy of one?

250 MB is approximately the amount of space Office will need to expand the
compressed files on the CD before the installation process begins.

Check to see if your TEMP folder is pointing to the drive letter assigned to
your CD drive.

In the end, I added another disk and cofigured it as the D: drive. My guess
is that TEMP was set incorrectly, but I've changed too many thing to go back
and check this now :-(. Thanks for all your help!

I have the same problem as Andy D had. After reading this thread, I have 2
questions:

1) How do you check to see that TEMP is "set" correctly, exactly which TEMP
file do you check, and how do you reset it? I have checked the TEMP file
that's on the root drive, the TEMP in Windows, and the TEMP in Documents and
Settings, and the properties box locates all of them in the proper hard drive.

2) Andy D - what do you mean by you added another disk? Did you create
another partition or actually attach another drive?

Here's my situation:

I am trying to reinstall Office 2003 but each time I try, I get an error msg
that tells me my _CD-Rom_ drive has insufficient disk space to complete the
operation.

Why am I reinstalling? I had Word and Outlook only on the computer, and want
to put on Powerpoint and Excel now.

When I just tried to add those, I kept getting failed installs. I concluded
something was wrong with my original installation, so I decided to try
uninstalling Office 2003 and reinstalling. Now I cannot complete that action,
b/c of the above problem.

I am running Windows XP SP1 on a Dell Inspiron 5100, 1 GB RAM. The hard
drive partition to which I want to reinstall is D:, the CD-Rom Drive is E:,
and the largest is partition is F:. During the install, I get this msg that
says E: does not have enough disk space.

Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated.

I had the same problem, after using alohabob to move stuff from an old PC to
a new PC. The migration must have left some of the old PC's
commands/files/settings on the new PC, that caused this. I finally solved it
by doing the following:
1) get MS's Article 307844 (How to change drive letter assignments)
2) following instructions in article, reassign the CD drive letter (the one
that's causing the problem - for me, it was E:) to a different drive
3) Assign a hard drive to the problem letter (E:), then reboot
4) try your Office install again

Hope this helps you; I know how frustrating it is, & how much time it wastes
trying to fix!
