"Setup cannot find Office.en-us\Setup.xml. Browse to a valid installation
source and then click OK."

The dialog I get is visible here:

I've verified that the file is on the installation media.

I've opened it and falling short of trying to parse the values it appears to
be valid XML.

I've copied the installation files over to my hard drive and tried the
install again. Same result.

I've cleaned up temp files.

I've checked my paths.

I've tried installing from Safe Mode.

Nothing works.

there is an occasional variation where it can't find a DIFFERENT file, but
nothing really works and nothing I've seen on the Net really describes MY
problem (although there are similar issues out there that I've seen.)

Well..

I was going to tell you to copy the entire cd to a local folder on your
machine and run setup from there, but then saw that you tried that.

Most often this error will occur because it has a problem reading the media.
Which correlates with it having problems reading other random files as well.

Does this install media work on other computers? Could you try copying the
source to a local folder on another PC and share the folder out and try
running the install from that shared folder?

I tried loading the install files on an external drive tonight and that, once
again, failed.

I'll try the install media on another machine tomorrow or Saturday.

My question is what happens to me if the other machine fails/works? Because
this disc and this machine are not playing nicely together.

An external drive failed. What about copying it to an internal drive.. like
the c drive?

If you are unable to make this work contact Microsoft at 800-936-4900. They
will not charge for support for single computer installation issues.
