install full file version of service pack 3

H

Hook'em 2006

I am trying to install SP3 for Office XP Professional. I do not have the
original installation disks as I am using a company-provided laptop. The
original CDs are at my company's headquarters. I have downloaded the
full-file version, but still cannot install the update. I get a message
everytime I log on advising that updates are available and need to be
installed. Any suggestions?

S

Susan Ramlet

Hi, Longhorn (just a guess),

Do you get an error when you run the full-file update?

H

Hook''em 2006

I don't get an error message but it asks for the installation CD or to
specify where a particular file is - I cannot remember the file name at this
time.

S

Susan Ramlet

It would help if you could post the exact error message you are seeing,
including the filename.

H

Hook''em 2006

Ok....I am trying to install the full version update and get the following
message: "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable
disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Office XP Professional
with Front Page' disk and click OK." At the bottom it says "Use source:" and
has a drop down box with "Browse" to the right. If I click on "Browse" the
file name is PROPLUS and the file type is Installation Package (*.msi). I
did a search of my C drive and did not find a file named "PROPLUS".

The file Proplus.msi belongs to a widely pirated volume edition of Microsoft
Office Professional with Front Page. Is this a home use (from your
employer) or an OEM installation, or is this from a CD that you purchased?

I'm not sure I understand your question. The program was loaded by my
employer on to the laptop that was provided to me by my employer. Every time
I go on-line with the laptop provided to me by my employer I am prompted to
download and install the update and always end up stuck as described below.
My employer has the CD and is located in another town than I am.

I also don't know if Office was purchased installed on the laptop or not - I
assume it was purchased pre-installed from Dell.

I was just checking as I don't try to help out folks with an illegal
installation. If this was provided by your employer, then it is okay.

It is just that the version you are using is so heavily pirated that I am
immediately suspicious when someone posts that they are using this version.

If the full file patch doesn't work, I believe you will need the CD,
unfortunately.

I also have the home edition of Office XP for my home PC - is it possible the
PROPLUS.msi file would be on that disc? I certainly don't want to do
anything to screw up my work computer but it is going to be a real pain to
send it off to my office to get the update installed.

Well, you could check, but unless the disk was used to install something on
your work PC, it's not likely that the Windows Installer would recognize it.

If you go into the Windows Control Panel, what Office family applications
are shown as being installed, in the "Add/Remove Programs" applet?
